To take the itch out of mosquito bites, and make them go away within a few days - rub the bite with a small piece of cut onion a few times a day. The juice neutralizes the itch and helps heal the bite. The more often you apply, the sooner the bite disappears. Everyone who tries it is astounded!


I've heard it may work on other insect bites, but have not tried it on anything other than mosquito bites.

Planet Orange for Money Savvy Kids


Planet Orange first launched by ING DIRECT in 2002. The site, recently redesigned, has been recognized as a “Best Bet” by USA TODAY and named ‘Best of the Web’ by Forbes.com as a helpful place where kids can learn about money in an educational and entertaining way.

Planet Orange now offers parents, educators, and children enhanced learning tools and games having to do with finances and money. There are a variety of space missions at Planet Orange, used to help kids discover the importance and value of money along with personal finance lessons through fun and engaging games and activities.


Planet Orange covers topics like earning, saving, spending and investing are all covered in an interactive, space themed manner. There’s also a Teacher’s Resource Center with tutorials, free lesson plans, and supplemental information and tools to enhance the learning experience.



Keep in mind that kids may need a parent’s help to register though, for a kids site I was sort of surprised at the long registration form.

Chicken and Potato Pancakes

Ingredients:
2 cups instant pancake mix
2 cups milk
2 cups shredded cooked chicken
1 1/2 cups (6oz) shredded Colby-jack cheese blend
1 cup refrigerated shredded hash browns
4 green onions, finely chopped
2 Tbsp. melted butter
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
Quick Cream Gravy (optional)

Directions:
Whisk together pancake mix and milk in a large bowl, whisking just until dry ingredients are moistened. Stir in chicken and next 6 ingredients, stirring just until blended. Pour about 1/4 cup batter for each cake onto a hot (350 degrees), lightly greased griddle or nonstick skillet. Cook pancakes 3 minutes or until tops are covered with bubbles and edges look dry and cooked; turn and cook other side 5 to 6 minutes or until done. Serve with Gravy if desired.

A Lot on the Line
Young anglers (up to age 16) will cast their lines at Fishing for Fun from 9-11:30am Saturday at Keller's Bear Creek Park Pond. The pond will be stocked with catfish for the event, and the kids will enjoy contests, drawings and more. Bring your own poles and bait; parents should plan to stay at the event. Free.

Dive In!
Grab your bathing suit and sunscreen and head to Splish Splash Storytime at 10am Friday at Denton's Water Works Park. Kids of all ages will battle their summer boredom with stories, puppets and a bit of splashing in the children's water park area. The storytime will end at 10:45am; after that, families must pay regular park admission. Free.

Turkey-Swiss-Guac Burger

Ingredients:
1 lb ground Turkey
4 slices of reduced fat Swiss cheese
4 white-wheat hamburger buns
4 tbsp of Wholly Guacamole
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
4 tbsp Ortega chopped green chilies
2 tomatoes (sliced)
1 red onion (slicked)

Directions:
Mix the turkey, salt, and pepper and shape into 4 patties.

Preheat grill, grill pan, or cast-iron skillet. Cook the patties over medium-high heat until lightly charred on the outside, about 4 minutes, then flip. Place a tablespoon of the chilies on top of each patty, then cover with a slice of Swiss. Cook until the patty is firm, about 8 to 10 minutes total.

Dress buns with tomato and onion slices (if you are an onion fan), top with the burgers and slather with guacamole.

Makes 4 servings @ $3.76 per serving before coupons.

This recipe was also found in the Eat This Not That, Supermarket Survival Guide by David Zinczenko with Matt Goulding on page 293. I highly recommend this book for money/calorie saving ideas.

Here is a recipe for:

Mango Raspberry Smoothie

Ingredients:
1 cup frozen mango
1 cup frozen raspberries
1/2 cup milk
3 1/2 cups of water
2 Tbsp ground flaxseed

Directions:
1. Add fruit, flaxseed, milk and water to blender. Blend!

Makes about 32 oz. of smoothie…enough for 4 cups!

Money saving tips: Turkey burgers are not only healthier than hamburgers but you can save a lot of money on ground turkey verses ground beef. Head to Target and take advantage of this weeks sales. If you buy a bag of Archer Farms Tortilla chips you get a free jar of salsa which is a good appetizer with the Turkey burgers. Top this tasty meal off with the smoothie with raspberries on sale for $.99 at Kroger. Always Always Always check coupons before heading to the store. Enjoy!

Frugal Tip for Thursday, June 11.

Ever since the gas price peak people have been looking for ways to spend less on gas. Here are a few tips on how to save on gas.

• The faster you drive, the more fuel you use. Drive slower, but not too slow.
• Use cruise control. My maintaining the same speed you will get better gas mileage.
• Combine errands
• Remove excess weight from your car. Remove unneeded items. It’s a good excuse to clean out your car.
• Keep up with car maintenance. Keep tires inflated and aligned, get frequent oil changes, regularly replace air filters,
• Look for a credit card that either gives you rewards or cash back for gas purchases. We have a Discover Gas card and get 5% cash back on all gas purchases.
• Buy gas when the temperature is cooler (like the early morning or at night) to reduce gas evaporation. Also, during these times gasoline is densest and you’ll get the most for your money.
• On the highway keep your windows closed. Open windows can reduce your gas mileage by as much as 10%.
• On the other hand, in stop and go traffic you want to open your windows and turn off the air-conditioning.
• Think ahead when nearing hills. Accelerate before you reach the hill, not while you're on it.
• Look for the most direct routes. Curves, corners, and jumping lanes requires extra gas. Remember, the shortest distance between two points is always straight.
• Driving in reverse uses more gas. Try to park in ways so that you wont need to put the car in reverse when leaving.
• Carpool.
• Walk or bike whenever you can.
• See if your city has a lowest gas price listing or web site. For example at dallasgasprices.com/ people report on where they have found cheap gas in the city of Dallas.

I wanted to start by sharing my friend's photography blog. Hailey is an very gifted and talented photographer who is excellent at capturing the right moment on film. She will do the standard posed photography but also does great candid shots. She amazes me at how she is able to literally turn her photos into a story about the person/s or family she is photographing. Enjoy her pictures for yourself here. You will save money by using her for your next set of professional pictures because of her great prices as well as the fact that she will give you a CD of the prints. A new website is in the works and will be up and running soon. I will post Hailey's new site address soon.

Boneless Chicken Wings
Ingredients:
1 pound of skinless chicken breasts
1/2 cup Frank's Red Wing Sauce (or any wing sauce you prefer)
1/8 tsp of Cayenne pepper
1/2 cup 2% plain yogurt (a yogurt based version of the usual wing dipping sauce. By using this version you reduce the extra calories)
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp black pepper
1/4 cup blue cheese
Worcestershire sauce
1 Tbsp white wine vinegar
16 celery sticks.

Directions:
Cut each chicken breast into 1/2" thick strips. Mix the chicken strips, wing sauce, cayenne pepper, garlic power, and black pepper in a large sealable bag and let marinate in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes up to 4 hours.

Preheat grill or broiler. Remove strips from the bag and cook for 3 to 4 minutes a side until lightly browned all over.

Combine the yogurt, blue cheese, a few shakes of Worcestershire sauce, and vinegar. Serve the wings with the blue cheese dressing and the celery sticks on the side..

Makes 4 servings at about $2.69 per serving before chaching coupons. Be sure to check the coupon bank heading to the store.

This recipe was found in the Eat This Not That, Supermarket Survival Guide by David Zinczenko with Matt Goulding on page 290. I highly recommend this book for money/calorie saving ideas.

Chicken Caesar Salad
Ingredients:
11/2 cups shredded chicken (To save money use the left over chicken from the boneless chicken wings.. You may need to double the recipe for the wings depending on the number of servings needed)
1/4 cup Newman's Own Lighten Up Caesar Dressing (If you aren't a Caesar fan use the dressing of your choice keeping the flavor of the chicken in mind)
2 whole wheat pitas cut into wedges tossed with olive oil and toasted.
olive oil (for the pitas)
1 head of romaine lettuce roughly chopped
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
cracked pepper

Directions:
Combine the chicken, romaine, dressing, and Parmesan cheese. Mix thoroughly until all leaves are evenly coated. Serve the salad with the pita croutons and desired amount of cracked pepper.

Makes 4 servings at $2.13 per serving before coupons. Remember to check the coupon bank.
