Wing It
Let your spirits soar at the Rosine Smith Sammons Butterfly House and Insectarium Grand Opening Weekend from 10am-5pm Saturday-Sunday at Dallas' Texas Discovery Gardens at Fair Park. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will kick things off at 9:45am Saturday, and families will enjoy crafts, live music, a balloon artist and more throughout the weekend. The butterfly house will help visitors learn about insects and botany year round. $4 adults; $3 seniors; $2 children ages 3-11; children younger than 3 free.
Wet and Wild
Spend a cool weekend on the lake with WaterFest at Willow Grove from 10am-6pm Saturday and 10am-5pm Sunday at Lake Dallas' Willow Grove Park. You'll see Jet Ski races, wakeboarding demonstrations and more, and children will flock to the Kid Zone, which will include games and inflatables. Live entertainment by Hard Night's Day and the Rayla Ray Band will round out the fun. Don't forget the sunscreen! Free.
History Comes Alive
Learn a bit of Dallas history with the Old Red Museum Family Day from 11am-3pm Saturday at the downtown Dallas museum. Check out the opening day of the new exhibit Your Dallas: Lancaster Legacy and Legends while enjoying crafts, performances, tours and more. Admission during Family Day is $5 per person; regular admission is $8 adults; $6 seniors and $5 children ages 3-16.
Family Fiesta
Have some fiesta-style fun at the Diez y Seis Celebration at 7:30pm Saturday at Fort Worth's Artes de la Rosa. The family-friendly event will include face painting, folklorico dancing, live music and more, all in celebration of Mexico's Independence Day. Don't miss the tasty and authentic treats on offer from local restaurants! Free.
For the Children
Stand up – and get moving – for a good cause at the Fifth-Annual Heroes for Children 5K Run/Walk starting at 7:45am Saturday at Plano's Shops at Legacy. Participate in the one-mile familiy fun run or the 5K run/walk, and then treat the kids to bounce houses and a performance by children's favorite Eddie Coker. Locally based charity Heroes for Children helps Texas families affected by childhood cancer. $25-$12 for race registration. –Claudia King
